The objective of this post is to explain what a poets role in a hunting situation is at earlier stages in the nexus ((pre-99)).  This is not meant for more advanced people, since the priorities or spell order of importance changes as you advance further along.

Healing:
Common courtesy toward the people that you are grouped with is to heal whenever the slightest bit of damage is taken.  It helps ease your fighters, make them more relaxed, make the hunt more enjoyable and less strenuous.  Just scrolling through your group healing everyone even if they don't need it can be a nice gesture, as well as a check to see if they need to be healed more (NOTE: group heal spells would better suit your need there, but keep mana efficiency in mind).  Basically, just keep your group healed full all the time to avoid a bad turn of events.  Sometimes, if you get caught up you might forget about your fighters and start to slack or not pay as great attention.  In that case a fighter would most likely begin healing themselves to show a vita loss (Remember: their heals are bad, so its basically just to let you know they need life, not to heal themselves full)

Timing:
The timing of your spells isn't the most important thing you should be doing, but it should rank up there.
  - Keeping your entire grouped Armored, Sanctuaried, and Valored - ASV is quite a daunting task, but in a tight situation you'll be glad that you don't have to worry about it.  Keep your personal screen set to "S" so that you can see when your asv is going to run out.  You should try to ASV yourself first, so that you have time to ASV the rest of your group as theirs runs out and not have to worry about yourself as much.
  - Invoking - You shouldn't invoke on aethers unless your running completely out of mana, that way you get full use from it.  Try to avoid a situation in which you run completely out of mana, to do this you must rely on pipes.

Pipes:
I cannot stress enough how important pipes are to pre-99 poets.  Due to high fail rates on certain spells you're constantly running out of mana with 10s left on invoke.  It's best advised that your inventory should be "a-through-p" with pipes, if you have enough gold for them (Sohni pipes work best as they are cheaper and you get more mana out of them).  Putting the pipe that you currently using on the letter "U" helps out a lot.  Try to time the seconds in your head while holding down "U" to get the mana that you need, while trying not to waste more puffs than needed.  It's best to try and incorporate using invoke as well, so that soon it will become second nature to you along with pipes.

Scourge/AC decreasing spells:
Your current creature arrangement/room situation should dictate how you're casting Scourge.  If your asv has run out just as you enter a room, take the time to ASV before SC.  You'll end up killing quicker in the long run if your fighter doesn't have to go and get resurrected;  life preservation first.  If your group is taking damage when they enter a cave try your best to Heal them first, and while scrolling from fighter to fighter possibly SC'ing a few monsters between so that you get a good mix.
Regular situations in which no one is being damaged you should take time to SC the room.  It wouldn't hurt to go over it a few times if you have the time, just to make sure you got them all.  If you notice an animal that your group is killing isn't sc'd, SC it!  You'll look more intuitive and on top of things if you SC it even if it's in red, it'll show you know it is a priority.
