The Decline and Death of RP Now, before we start please do not get me wrong. I am not saying that RP is dead... Just starting to go that way. Of course, those that RP cannot express so freely the roles and positions that take under there active roleplay, but I can assure you a majority are happy with RP and would rather it not dilute into the wonderful world of 'lol' and 'pwn'. But of course, like with all things lacking major reconstructive surgery is needed to get RP looking cosmetically sound once more. But how do we do this? First and foremost, identifying the problem:: The Kingdoms is populated with hundreds of individual minds and learning curves some are mature, some are not. That will always be the case and it will never change. But lets put this into percentages, so far we at 50/50. Now, those that are mature will often hold a lot more patience to stay vigilant to an RP whereas those that are not get bored quickly and wish to do other things to entertain themselves. So we have 50% of Nexus who are patient and mature enough to be able to follow a consistant RP in the game. Oh, and by all means do not confuse maturity with 'smart' or 'wit'. I have seen some of the worlds best wit on the community boards but I would hardly call them mature. Now, of the 50% that are mature enough to RP only half will actually do that. Reason being is because people use Nexus for different reasons. Some use it as an escape to fantasy to by all means role play, others use it as a video game/chat room. They are free to do that by the way, theres no laws preventing them in doing so. So currently we have 25% of the community willing to Role play... no wonder the Elders are worried about quotas! Now, thats where the stig comes into play, quota. Sub paths who act as a large force behind RP in the game are forced to 'adapt' to the current community or face disbandment. This is why you will see those in sub paths out of character on soooo many occasions because they no longer have to keep that RP consistancy up. Now, lots of people do like to keep it up, but you need to understand that with the other 75% of the community speaking out of character it would make it very challanging to keep a level of RP that will no doubt infuriate the intendee. So lets put this into bullet points (and please understand, these are my views) [] 25% of the community will actually RP [] Those in the 25% bracet are forced to OOC in order to socialise and speak to other players [] Elders cannot inforce a RP to SP successfully because it causes disruption and no members = no SP. Now, lets talk about how in todays community RP actually still works. When a member of the community wishes to interact with a SP member of the community, lets say Alignments with Druids or Karma readings, you will get a level of RP from both members! Why! Mainly because both get something out of it. The sub path member gets to feel he/she is RP once more and the community member gets a benefit out of it. Now, lets talk solutions. The key I believe is community involvement, keeping the community actively involved within the path and I don't just mean events. Those are side shows, games with prizes and loot. I mean a constructive story involving a singular sub path or many sub paths that leads to community involvement and perhaps an award for the participants. Elders should be meeting with each other OOC, just themselves to discuss ideas of bringing RP back into the community. Creating stories, and plots and ongoing sagas that are both fun and enjoyable. This does not always mean going to a room and watching people act out a RP which consists of talking. People get bored easily and we have a long way to go until we are ready for that level. | |
