I can't really disagree with the spirit of EC's post - there are very few items with serious pricetags you really need on the way up, barring the daily coins (which, nasty).

But there's a reason the ee flamespear commands the price it does, and it's not a marginal straight swing damage bump.

These weapons are used in ATG, and specifically in ATG5. Warriors using ee weapons and ee ingresses in ATG5 are killing targets with just a couple of swings - they will regularly kill targets from full before they can take a single extra step.

The spear's extra range means you're getting substantially more swing uptime.  You're no longer waiting for targets to replace one another, and you're regularly scoring double hits by having an unoccupied tile next to you.  It's a very significant boost.

Additionally, it's not as though you're simply paying to speed your own progress.  You're often going to be the group's entire damage output, so having this extra power will inevitably help you find hunting partners and incentivize those you do find to stay for longer trips.

It's definitely not necessary to get to where you're going, but you also definitely feel the degree of disadvantage from the lack of it - for your partners' sake, as well as your own.  It's no surprise that people value it so highly.

Is the weapon just overpowered? Maybe a little, but really, this is a result of the environment.

Unfortunately, fixing ATG is an effort that will require a fair bit of thought.  Giving the flamespear some more accessible alternatives, on the other hand, is really rather straightforward.  Swap out the existing carpented polearms, or introduce a new permanent quest - either way, this is an easy problem to remedy.

It's also definitely worth doing. The impenetrable economy really doesn't do us any favours when it comes to new player retention. Ensuring people don't *feel* gated by gold - whether they literally are or not - can only be beneficial, as far as I see it.
