*you find a note folded and pinned to the board* *the note folds open* *the page is torn, almost cutting off the writing* *the note is titled {Something to Remember} ~Hyul 161, Moon 7, Sun 17 The alleys of the kingdoms are where I belong. The neglected nooks, decaying staircases and rain drenched pathways recognize my steps more intimately than any companion ever could. I'm a beggar to those who glance too hastily. A specter to those who take a second look. I rest where rats gorge, awaken before the crows and disappear before the cities acknowledges my presence. The royals think that darkness ceases where their lanterns shine. They have never ventured into my domain. A blade represents mercy. Sabotage embodies suffering. I have witnessed granaries rot from the inside until hunger infiltrated an army without a single skirmish. Wells became tainted under the moonlight, forcing men to sip death one gulp at a time. Livestock crumpled where they stood, their remains nourishing flies instead of soldiers. Panic is a more effective weapon than steel. Hunger drives brothers to betray one another. Thirst leads even the devout to doubt their deities. By the time they seek an adversary, I have already slipped away, leaving only murmurs that something eerie traversed the streets. As dawn paints the sky.. I return to the alleys cloaked in tattered rags and silence. Guards step over me. Merchants curse my existence. Children turn their heads away. They perceive a worthless vagrant.. never the hand that hollowed out an entire community without unsheathing a sword. That is my finest disguise. Heroes etch their names into history with blood. I erase mine with shadows. Long after the final lantern extinguishes.. the inhabitants of the kingdoms still secure their doors, fearing the unseen saboteur who roams the streets they have forsaken to darkness. They never utter my name above a whisper. {A name erased before it could be remembered} | |
