I suppose insects have been trying to teach me that for years. A moth does not bury itself beneath a mountain of leaves. It finds the right piece of bark and stays still. You can look right at it and never notice it. The best hiding place is not always the one with the most cover. Sometimes it is simply where you look like you belong.

The same idea could help if the trail led me back toward a village. Trees and shadows would not help much there, so I would need social camouflage instead. I would watch how people dressed, spoke, and behaved and try to blend in with them. If someone knew something about Sally's husband, announcing myself as the Scout searching for him might make them keep quiet. Fitting in could give me a better chance to listen and learn without drawing attention. In the forest I have to understand my natural surroundings. Among people, the people become my surroundings.

I still have not found Sally's husband, but I feel closer to solving the mystery. Tracking has taught me to notice the signs he leaves behind, while camouflage has taught me to think about the ones I leave behind too. I am beginning to think I will need more of the Rangers skills before I finally find him.

For now, the trail continues.
