My search for Sally's husband did not end at the abandoned camp. I picked up his trail and followed it deeper into the wilderness. Somewhere along the way, I realized I had been so busy studying the signs he left behind that I had not thought much about the signs I was leaving myself.

That worried me. What if he did not want to be found and knew someone was following him? Worse, what if someone had taken him and knew I was searching? Following the trail openly could give me away before I ever learned the truth. That was when camouflage stopped feeling like a separate skill and became a necessary part of tracking.

As the trail grew fresher, I slowed down and looked for somewhere I could watch ahead without being noticed. The thickest brush seemed like an obvious hiding place, but not if every step snapped a branch or shook a bush. I chose the terrain with sight, sound, and movement in mind: cover that matched my surroundings, ground I could cross quietly, and a place where I could stay still or move slowly without drawing attention. Physical camouflage, I learned, is not about magically disappearing. It is about using the land around you well enough that you stop standing out from it.
