I have given this subject some thought, and I think that protecting nature comes in multiple forms. It means protecting the land, the animals, and plant life, at least at my current level of understanding. It means keeping our eyes open, and acting with caution while we are in nature. Nature maintains a certain balance on its own, but that balance is easily disturbed by humans. Overhunting, fire, and destroying habitats by other methods are all ways that humans can do severe harm. We are able to identify things that are out of place, when we are familiar with the area and how it has been. As long as we are present, we should be mindful of our own actions. Protecting nature begins with being conscious of our own decisions. My goal is to protect nature in a few different ways. I want to remain vigilant, to see problems as they arise. I believe that the earlier a problem is identified, damage can be contained to be minimal, or perhaps prevented. I plan to then decide if the change is natural, or unnatural. If researching shows me that nature is acting on its own, free of tampering, I will allow nature to work. If I am forced to take action, I wish to do so in a manner that will restore the natural balance and prevent further interference. I don't know that solving problems on my own, or assisting others in their efforts, is really enough to consider myself a true protector of nature. I also plan to teach my students, and other willing members of the community, what I have learned so that others may share in our respect and knowledge. While spending time with the 4 wilderness paths, each of them have expressed their admiration for nature. After learning from them, I too see the importance of the values they stressed to me. I think it is a very worthy cause to dedicate myself to, and I wish more people would do the same. LawAndOrder ~Divine Librarian~ | |
