I have given some thought to where I would place myself between Yin and Yang, and I dont think I could honestly choose one. There are times when I would rather remain quiet, observe, and let things take their course. There are also times when I need to speak, teach, act, or stand firm. Neither feels more true to me than the other. One thing Wu Wei has taught me is that balance isn't finding the perfect middle and staying there. Balance moves. What is needed in one moment may not be what is needed in the next. Our teachings describe balance as something continuously shifting and becoming, rather than a fixed state. Water is probably the best example. It yields and moves around whatever stands before it, yet over time it can wear away stone. What appears weak can carry great strength. I try to remember that in how I approach others and the world around me. So perhaps there is some truth in seeing me as both Yin and Yang. I certainly haven't mastered either, and I dont believe I have mastered balance. I'm still learning when to act and when to wait, when to speak and when silence is better. If I had to answer the question, I would simply say I am both, and perhaps neither. I am still learning to recognize what each moment asks of me and trying not to force what does not need to be forced. Sometimes I get it right, and sometimes I dont. I suppose thats part of being a forever student. | |
