Our relationship with nature is a curious one. Surrounded by the great walls of the kingdom, it is easy to believe that we have somehow separated ourselves from the wild. That the forests, rivers, and mountains exist beyond our lives, distant and of little consequence. Yet I challenge that notion. Stone may define the boundaries of our cities, but it cannot keep out Awen. Her presence lingers in every corner of these lands, flowing quietly through the lives we lead, whether we choose to notice her or not. The gifts of Awen are woven into nearly every facet of our existence. The timber that shelters our families, the stone that raises our walls, the fertile soil that nourishes our tables, and the fibers, pigments, and melodies that inspire our artists upon the grandest stages all spring from her generosity. We often celebrate the works of our own hands, forgetting that they are built upon gifts first offered by the natural world. And while Awen is endlessly patient, she is never indifferent. Nature possesses an enduring wisdom, forever seeking balance. Sometimes she speaks with the gentle murmur of a winding stream, inviting growth and renewal. At other times, she reminds us of her power through the fury of a storm or the relentless force of a hurricane. Both are expressions of the same truth: balance will always be restored. So I leave each of you with a challenge for the road ahead. As you walk beneath the open sky or within the shelter of these walls, take a moment to reconsider your relationship with Awen. Resist the instinct to ask only what she might provide next, or what gifts remain for you to harvest. Instead, ask a different question: What may I give in return? How might your actions restore rather than diminish, nurture rather than consume, and leave the world richer than you found it? For harmony with nature is not measured by all that we receive, but by our willingness to become faithful stewards of the balance she so patiently preserves. A Passing Ranger | |
