I decided to make my own bow for my hunt. I started by choosing a sturdy branch that was a little longer than my torso. I wanted one that was strong but not too dry or too green, so it would bend without breaking. I shaped it to the right length, added a grip, and made notches for the string. For the string, I chose deer tendons as they are flexible and can spring back. I then made my arrows from firm sticks about the length of my forearm. I shaved and smoothed them to help them fly more easily and added bird feathers to the back for stability. Lastly, since I was going hunting, I chose a sharp metal tip. Once my bow and arrows were ready, I headed into the woods looking for a rabbit for dinner. I moved slowly and quietly, keeping an eye out for tracks, droppings, and other signs that a rabbit had been nearby. I really enjoyed this part because I had to slow down and pay attention to things I normally might not notice.After following the signs for a while, I finally spotted a rabbit. I stayed quiet and used the surrounding trees and bushes to keep myself hidden. I waited patiently for the right opportunity before taking my shot. My hunt was successful - this experience made me realize that hunting as a Ranger isn't just about getting food, but that it's about using my skills responsibly, respecting the animal, and appreciating what the Wilderness provides. ~Azabu Juban | |
