The cool breeze of the Woodlands hit me as soon as I entered. Our scouting instructor, Quotah, met us near the entrance and informed us to head north into the arid and dry landscape.

The walk was short but quickly met with some difficulties. The barren land offered little resources. We foraged for food by tracking and slaying snakes and rats. A water source was found in the north east, where we could fish and gather liquids. The trees here were mostly dead, so dry firewood was easy to gather, and large stones and logs could be gathered to build shelter.

Next we traveled west, to a small outcrop of beach sand, palm trees, and salt water. For food we foraged for coconuts, tracked down lobsters and monkeys, and fished in the open waters. Quotah informed us that any use of water needed to be filtered first, by using sand and stones, then the water would require boiling to rid it of any contamination. She also warned us about falling coconuts and to be aware that the monkeys were cleaver and would likely steal any food we tried to save.

For our final stop we traveled into snowcovered ground where warmth is priority. We were warned of large bears and potential frost bite. Quotah said to be cautious when approaching the bears as they are mighty and likely on the hunt. Their large size meant they are a great source of food, and their pelts would offer great resistance against the cold. She also mentioned we could gather snow and ice to melt down and purify to quench our thirst, if need be.

Overall the scouting trip taught me a lot. I will be sure to utilize these skills the next time I find myself deep in the woodlands.
